CEDAR CITY — Iron County Sheriff’s Office has released the name and cause of death of a California man whose body was located by Iron County search and rescue crews Monday.

The man, identified as Lawrence E Sullivan, 75, from Encinitas, California, was found dead Monday morning after Iron County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by his family that he had not checked in during a hunting trip.

“At this time it appears the cause of death is related to a heart related medical issue,” Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. Del Schlosser said in a news release Friday night.

The search first began with a welfare check Dec. 5. Sheriff’s deputies were able to locate Sullivan’s camp off Buckskin Road near state Route 20, but could not find Sullivan.

At the request of Sullivan’s family, deputies gave Sullivan an extra day to make contact, but when the family still had not heard from him by Sunday at 4 p.m., they contacted the Sheriff’s Office once again.

Returning to Sullivan’s camp, deputies found no sign of the man and called the Iron County Search and Rescue team to help locate him. Volunteers spent the better part of Sunday night and Monday morning searching for Sullivan before finally finding him dead about a mile away from his camp.

Sullivan’s body was sent to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death.
