CEDAR CITY – Four Region 9 girls teams competed in the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic in Cedar City Monday. Snow Canyon suffered its first loss while the other three secured victories. Here’s a look at the results:
Hurricane 50, South Summit 36
The Lady Tigers rolled to an easy win over South Summit. Tough defense from Hurricane blanked the Lady Wildcats in the first quarter 9-0. South Summit’s offense finally got on track in the second quarter, but the Wildcats were still outscored by Hurricane 13-9.
“We were up 22-9 at the half, but we emphasized the things we were doing well in the first quarter that had slipped in the second,” said Hurricane head coach Franci Homer. “Specifically, moving our feet and sustaining our blockouts.”
The Tigers also switched up their defensive scheme. “We switched to a zone in the second half,” said Homer.
Offensively, the Tiger guards were finding posts Carrie Marshall and Morgan Huntsman all night.
“We caught them in their zone shifts,” said Homer. “Our posts were getting wide open shots most of the game.”
While South Summit stayed with the Tigers most of the second half, the Wildcats could never close the lead below double digits. Individually, Marshall had 13 points and eight rebounds. Huntsman had 10 points and eight rebounds. Jayden Langford had 10 points and five steals.
South Summit dropped to 0-8. The Lady Tigers improved to 5-5. Hurricane will continue play in the Classic Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. against Tooele.
Pine View 47, Woods Cross 33
The Lady Panthers displayed their usual voracious D to hold the Lady Wildcats of Woods Cross to just 10 first-half points.
“Our goal is to limit the other team to 40 points or less per game,” said Pine View head coach Chris Brinagh. “In the second quarter today, we held a good team to only two points. Our defensive effort was outstanding today.”
Stefani Gleave came out of the gate with her aim honed in on 3-pointers. She had three in the first to give the Lady Panthers a 19-8 lead.
“In the second quarter, the Christmas break kicked in on us,” Brinagh said. “We ran out of gas offensively and sputtered a bit.”
The Panthers still increased their lead to 26-10 at halftime and then the Panthers outscored Woods Cross 16-12 in the third to take a 20-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Wildcats made a bit of a comeback in the fourth, but never got the lead to single digits.
“We ran out of gas in the fourth,” said Brinagh. “We had to put in some backups out of necessity.”
As a team, the Panthers outshot Woods Cross 51 to 27 percent and outrebounded them 30-18. Individually, Gleave led the team with 17 points. Tayvia Ah Quin had 10 points and nine rebounds. Saraven Allen also scored 10 points.
The Lady Wildcats drop to 3-5. Pine View improves to 7-2. The Lady Panthers will play North Sanpete Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Cedar 55, North Sanpete 28
The Lady Reds used a stellar second half to blow open a tight game.
“We did not come ready to play in the first half,” said Cedar head coach John Elison. “We made some sloppy fouls and put them on the free throw line where they got most of their points.”
Cedar still led 23-20 at the half.
“We made a few adjustments at halftime,” said Elison. “But really the girls just needed to play better.”
The players did play better, responding with a 32-8 shellacking of the Lady Hawks in the second half.
“Offensively, we moved the ball around well,” said Elison. “We got balanced scoring from everyone tonight.”
Cedar moves to 6-3 while North Sanpete falls to 4-7. Individually, Morgan Myers scored 13 points and had four steals. Jessica Whetman had seven points and seven rebounds. Prescilla Ziegler had seven points. Courtney Morley and Carley Davis each had six points.
Cedar will play Panguitch Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Juab 50, Snow Canyon 37
The Lady Warriors suffered their first loss of the season against the Lady Wasps.
“We struggled to hit shots all game,” said Snow Canyon head coach Dan Roden. “We were sluggish and played our worst game of the year.”
Snow Canyon trailed 21-17 at the break. Two quick baskets tied the game shortly after halftime, but then Juab made a 13-4 run to finish the third and led by nine, 34-25.
Snow Canyon’s press led to 11 steals, but the Lady Warriors failed to convert those turnovers into points. Individually, Madison Mooring scored 15 points. Lindsy McConnell and Shaylee Reed scored six and five, respectively. Natalie Coulomb led the team with seven rebounds.
“It was a wake-up call,” said Roden. “You cannot play poorly against a good team like Juab and still get a win.”
Snow Canyon falls to 8-1 while Juab moves to 5-3. Snow Canyon will play Woods Cross Tuesday morning at 11 a.m.
