CEDAR CITY – A man was found dead inside his home Tuesday morning after law enforcement responded to a report of a domestic dispute involving the man waving a gun at the woman who lives with him as she was loading three children into a car in their driveway. Police surrounded the home upon arrival when they heard what sounded like a gunshot.

Responders were dispatched to the couple’s home at 5341 N. 2900 West in the Cedar Valley area of Cedar City Tuesday sometime around 9 a.m., Iron County Sheriff Mark Gower said.

Laura Bye, who lives two doors down from the property involved, was outside feeding the ducks, she said, when she heard screaming and yelling from the neighbors two doors down. The man was was in the driveway waving a gun around and screaming at the woman as she was loading her three children into the car to take them to school, she said.

The man was hitting the car windows, Bye said, and broke one of them.

Bye then called the police. This happens all the time, she said, and nobody does anything about it and she had had enough.

Gower said this is a known house on their watch and confirmed Bye’s report of the incident unfolding, noting the investigation is ongoing.

As the wife left the property, Bye said, she stopped and apologized to Bye and said the man threatened to kill her and the whole family.

When the Sheriff’s SWAT deputies first arrived on scene they thought they heard a gunshot, Gower said, so they secured the perimeter of the home to make sure neighbors were safe.

There was not enough time to evacuate nearby homes, he said, so officers asked neighbors to remain inside their homes until further notice.

The deputies made a plan to enter the home, the sheriff said.

A boom heard in the area around 10:45 a.m. was a flash bang, Gower said, which is something used to create a dynamic entry. It grabs the attention of the person in the home so if they have a weapon they are not going to fire on the officers but focus on the boom.

When officers entered the home, they found a man dead, Gower said. There was no one else in the home.

Although it appears the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, it remains for the medical examiner to provide confirmation.

No names of parties involved will be released Tuesday, Gower said, allowing time for authorities to give notifications to family members.

The wife and children are all safe, he said after the incident. She was in a car down the street.

Two women came to the scene from Canyon Creek Women’s Crisis Center, a nonprofit organization in Cedar City, offering support and assistance to the wife.

Responders to the scene included: Iron County Sheriff’s Office, including its SWAT team; Cedar City, Enoch City and Parowan police departments; Cedar City Fire Department; Utah Highway Patrol.

Handguns in the home, making us all safer since never.

    • IDIOT COMMENTERS January 19, 2016 at 4:02 pm

true, seems for every incident of a personal handgun saving someone in self-defense there are 100 incidents like this

      • Rainbow Dash January 19, 2016 at 10:58 pm

        more like 10,000.

It’s actually the inverse, as conservative estimates by independent (i.e. not paid by gun-control or pro-gun lobby groups) researchers put defensive gun uses at about 250,000 per year nationwide. The annual gun accident rate and gun suicide rate combined is barely a fraction of that. But you all can continue to believe whatever BS is being fed to you by gun-control special interest groups and their bought-and-paid-for “research” cronies.

all people should have a way to defend theirselves. idiots don’t get to change the rights of everyone else. wake up people. i’m just so glad she got out. this could have been so much worse. women get so beat down emotionally, they believe the domestic abuser that all is their fault.

I saw a video made by a psychiatrist once that was prison guys in there for crippling, maiming or killing their families. They got some sort of in prison reward if they were candid about their abuse. i remembered my stomach turning as they laughed about deliberatly ruining holidays because if she felt safe and happy around extended family she might try to leave him.. so he had to ruin it, cause a stink or make a scene usually in the wifes supposed defense about something or not even let them go. many of them talked about their wives looking happy and prettier and they start thinking she might be thinking about leaving maybe has met someone.. so they go find anything to knock her emotionally down.. like saying all the dishes are filthy, don’t u know how to wash dishes.. where were u raised in a barn.. your nothing but a fat cow, your lucky i even want you.. etc etc. the woman grieves..

sometimes it escalates into a beating or throwing something at the spouse or direct and horrific threats.. one man ever so callously recalled his wife curled up bawling, and he said, i craved the make up time and to see want me… so i would hit her and then while she was all broken in tears, i’d gently go pick her up and i would put on my best cry.. no it wasn’t real it was fake.. and i would grieve with her about how special she was to understand me and put up with me.. that she was the most unique woman in the world.. and that i didn’t deserve her and was going to go kill myself. and she would run after me holding me crying no no no i love you… and he said, i just ate that up. he said sometimes it was funny.. caused i planned the whole thing. i would have to excuse myself go into the bathroom quickly because i couldn’t hold the smile or laughter back.

other prisoners gave the same stories. it was all about power.. sleeping with their friends was about power over their wives.. putting a wedge between them so the wife had no one but the spouse. it was a real eye opener.. the temper part was big with all of them, but their tempers were not over the usual things ppls tempers flare up for, their tempers usually flowed over the wife wisening or children and using their backbone.. that could get you killed and that is usually what these med did.. one killed his wife with the TV REMOTE!!! a phone was used in one instance..

the most dangerous time EVER for an abused woman is when she leaves. that is why she should never tell him she’s leaving, and don’t tell him where she is going. get a protection order they have a safe anonomous address seal for docket. but just so we’re all clear… guns didn’t kill these families.. idiots did. you gonna outlaw tv remotes too? gun are for defense of freedom and food. if some people use them stupidly those people are making a choice to the rest of nation? we’re letting an idiot decide our futures? no thank you.

    • Rainbow Dash January 19, 2016 at 11:28 pm

I have an idea, How about we pass some legislation that makes it more difficult for people like those abusers you talked about to get guns in the first place?

      • Terry January 20, 2016 at 6:59 am

There is, go fill out an app to buy a Weapon.

      • Terry January 20, 2016 at 7:01 am

Then there’s the street purchase, nothing anyone can do.

Well whoopy for you Terry. I’m not impressed one bit. I pack every day to because of people like you

      • tastysprinkles March 7, 2016 at 4:49 pm

There is already legislation in place for that. As for why it’s not being effectively enforced, ask Obama, because it’s a federal law. The gun-control lobby has an interest in not properly enforcing current laws, because it allows them to build a narrative around enacting gun bans, which is their ultimate goal.

    • IDIOT COMMENTERS January 19, 2016 at 11:38 pm

      cool story

  • .... January 20, 2016 at 12:09 am

Oh heck give everybody a gun . and get it over with already

  • Ron January 20, 2016 at 8:49 am

The problem is not the gun. The problem here is the mental stability of the husband. Guns are just a tool like any other implement. There are more than enough gun laws on the books, just be more aggressive in enforcing those that already exist. However, there really needs to be more help for those suffering from mental health issues. Granted, those with mental health issues should NOT have easy access to firearms. Guns don’t kill people by themselves. People who are evil and/or mentally ill kill people.

  • .... January 20, 2016 at 10:12 am

    The problem is global warming

  • ladybugavenger January 20, 2016 at 1:54 pm

I don’t own on a gun, nope nope nope. I don’t want to shoot nobody. My bare and hands are lethal weapons

    • tastysprinkles March 7, 2016 at 4:52 pm

bare hands actually are quite deadly. Ask any EMT in a big city how many deaths they’ve responded to that resulted from nothing but a fist-fight or someone falling over and banging their head into concrete after getting knocked upside the head. There are tons of people who die this way, every year. The brain is a very sensitive organ. There have been over 900 deaths in REGULATED PROFESSIONAL BOXING since 1900 – that’s approximately 10 deaths for every year that it has been tracked. Hands, even gloved/padded hands, are very deadly. Violent behavior in general is the problem with society. Gun deaths are a small fraction of total homicides and suicides.

  • ladybugavenger January 20, 2016 at 1:54 pm

    * bare hands
