WASHINGTON CITY — A mishap involving a burn barrel led to a portion of a field going through an early agricultural burn Monday.

The Washington City Fire Department responded to the report of a brush fire in the area of 3000 E. Washington Dam Road around 2:20 p.m. The homeowner was burning debris in a burn barrel when flames escaped and started burning nearby grass.

“Fortunately he realized it was growing pretty quick and he called us,” Washington City Fire Capt. Matt Evans said.

Once the fire crew arrived, they learned that the area being torched was to be part of an agricultural burn slated for March.

The firefighters did not extinguish the fire at first, but rather let the fire run its course and burn through that part of the field. All the while, the firefighters made sure the burn remained contained until they finally put it out.

No structures or individuals were harmed.

“No harm, no foul, no damage,” Evans said.

Firefighters left the scene soon after, leaving a safely burned field behind them and the smell of charred manure in the air.

The spring burn season officially starts March 1 and goes through May 30.
