LAIE, Hawaii – The Dixie State men’s basketball team could not complete the Hawaii sweep as the Red Storm fell to BYU-Hawaii 95-83 late Tuesday night.
The Dixie State defense could not stifle the hot-shooting Seasiders. BYU-H shot 62 percent from the floor, including 50 percent (12 of 24) from beyond the arc.
It was close early on. Mark Ogden’s jumper just after the first media timeout gave DSU an 8-7 lead. Then things fell apart for the Storm. The Seasiders put together a 17-2 run, capped by two Justin Yamzon 3-pointers. DSU coach Jon Judkins called a timeout to stop the barrage.
Post Josh Fuller put in two baskets to pull the Storm to back within 10. Dixie State would have trouble getting beyond that barrier for most of the half. The lead was still 10 with 2:45 remaining, 40-30, on Ian Harward’s free throw. Two jumpshots by Zac Hunter fueled a closing 5-2 run.
BYU-H would again get the lead to double digits early in the second half and carry it through the first eight minutes. Justin Park’s free throw with 11:58 to play had the Seasiders up 59-49. Then the Storm caught fire.
Mason Sawyer scored eight points in a 17-4 run. Josh Fuller’s power move with 8:24 remaining in the game gave DSU a 66-63 lead. A 3-point play and a 3-pointer by BYU-H changed the lead for the final time. The Seasiders would not trail again.
BYU-H hit 10 of their final 12 shots. During the same stretch, Dixie State hit 5 of 13, but also committed five costly turnovers.
Individually, Fuller led all players with 25 points. He was joined in double figures by Sawyer (19) and Hill (17). Fuller also pulled down eight rebounds. Robbie Nielson led the team with five assists.
Cory Lange led the Seasiders with 22 points, including hitting 6-9 3-pointers. Former BYU Cougar Ian Harward returned for the first time in five games and recorded 9 points and 5 rebounds in just 13 minutes. Harward has been recovering from concussion-like symptoms.
Dixie State shot 43 percent from the field and 38 percent from 3-point land. The Storm outscored BYU-H 42-34 in the paint and held a big 17-3 advantage on second-chance points.
BYU-H improves to 11-6 overall and 8-4 in the PacWest. DSU drops to 9-8, 6-5 in the PacWest. Dixie State will return home to host Hawaii Pacific on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Women’s basketball
BYU-Hawaii 92, Dixie State 79
The Dixie State women’s basketball team looked to return from the Hawaiian Islands with a winning record on the three-game trip, but a slow start doomed the Storm women in a 92-79 loss at BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday.
Dixie State shot 41 percent (26 of 63) from the field, 22 percent (5-22) from beyond the arc, and 88 percent (22-25) from the free throw line. BYU-Hawaii shot a similar 43 percent (31-73) from the field, but it was the 3-point shot that made the difference as the Seasiders knocked down 10-23 shots (43 percent) from outside.
Taylor Mann led four DSU players in double figures with 22 points and 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season (fifth consecutive). Sandria Bolden added a career-high 14 points, Leslie Tademy chipped in 13 points and 7 assists. Tomorie Sangster finished with 10 points.
The Storm now return home to host Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at 5 p.m., to tip off a five-game home stand.
