CEDAR CITY — A woman was transported to the hospital early Thursday morning after the driver of a Jeep turning towards the sun’s glare struck the woman in a crosswalk near Southern Utah University.
Cedar City Police and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the area of 200 South and 300 West at 8:45 a.m. after a call came into Public Safety Dispatch.
The woman was walking on the east side of 300 West and was in the crosswalk, crossing over 200 South when the driver of the silver Jeep hit her, Cedar City Police Officer Zachary Adams said.
The Jeep was traveling south on 300 West and making a left turn into the morning sun onto 200 South, Adams said.
The woman who was hit was transported to Cedar City Hospital, formerly known as Valley View Medical Center, to be treated for injuries.
Adams would not speculate on the extent of the injuries the woman sustained, but did confirm she was injured.
Adams said he was unsure if the woman was a student at the university or not.
A witness on the scene told Cedar City News that she saw the whole thing happen.
She was driving to work, she said, when she noticed the person who was hit walking parallel to her in the crosswalk. She said she didn’t think the driver of the Jeep saw her at all.
“I saw the car hit the girl,” the witness said. “That caused her to flip up into the air and hit the ground.”
The wintess pulled over, yelling to the driver to call 911, she said, and then watched in awe as the girl who was struck stood up to her feet.
“I could not believe it,” she said. “Aside from a bloody lip and bruised leg, she seemed okay (but) in shock. The driver of the vehicle was in a lot of shock,” the witness said, adding that she was glad to be able to help them.
The driver of the Jeep was visibly upset with tears in her eyes. Another officer on the scene reminded the driver that not only was it an accident, but at that early time of the day with the sun so bright and so many students walking to and from Southern Utah University, accidents like this happen more often than one might think.
