HURRICANE – A moment’s distraction resulted in a teen being hit by an SUV while in a crosswalk in Hurricane Friday evening.
Shortly before 6 p.m., a 16-year-old girl crossing State Street at the 300 West intersection was struck by an eastbound 2005 Toyota Tacoma while in the crosswalk, Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.
The driver of the Tacoma, a 16-year-old boy, was allegedly looking down and possibly talking to others in the SUV when he noticed too late that the light at the 300 West intersection had turned red, Buell said.
While coming to a sudden stop, the SUV entered the crosswalk and struck the girl.
The girl received minor injuries, though refused transport to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Her parents took her to the hospital for care instead.
The driver of the SUV was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, Buell said.
Hurricane City Police and Hurricane Valley Fire and Ambulance responded to the incident.
