ST. GEORGE – A small brush fire near Sunset Elementary was quickly doused by fire crews Friday night.
Around 8 p.m., reports came into the St. George Communications Center of a brush fire in a field behind Sunset Elementary and a neighboring Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on Westridge Drive.
The first fire engine arrived on scene around 8:10 p.m., St. George Fire Battalion Chief Ken Guard said. They were soon joined by a second fire truck and two brush fire trucks, with about 12 firefighters in all responding to the scene.
The fire itself covered an area of about 75 feet by 75 feet, Guard said, and was subsequently put out by the fire crews.
The cause of the fire is unknown, though there is a possibility it might have been human-caused, Guard said. It could have been a homeless individual staying in the field, or maybe children, he said.
“There’s some stuff out there that possibly indicates a homeless person was there,” Guard said.
With the fire extinguished and operations completed, fire crews left the scene around 9:20 p.m., leaving the smell of burnt vegetation behind them.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
