HURRICANE — Two vehicles carrying six occupants collided at the intersection of State Street and S. 1150 West Sunday night, leaving one passenger injured, followed by an altercation between the families of the drivers involved in the accident.

Just after 6:15 p.m. officers responded to a reported accident and found two vehicles in the middle of the intersection after one driver failed to yield, Hurricane City Police Sgt. Yates Wright said.

A silver Ford Taurus, carrying four occupants, travelling eastbound on State Street entered the turning lane to travel northbound on S. 1150 West and struck a green 2000 Jeep Cherokee travelling through the intersection heading southbound.  The impact spun both vehicles around in the middle of the intersection until coming to rest facing the opposite direction, Wright said.

Immediately after the vehicles came to a stop  a man jumped out of the driver’s side of the silver Ford and changed places with the woman on the passenger’s side, so it appeared that the woman was driving, Wright said.

“It turned out to be from a driver’s license issue,” Wright said. “And the man didn’t want to be reported as the driver,” he said.

The woman on the passenger side sustained minor injuries during the accident, and was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage that left them inoperable, and were towed from the scene, Wright said.

As family members arrived at the scene to pick up those involved in the accident, a verbal altercation ensued in the parking lot of the Phillips 66 gas station, bringing numerous officers to the scene, Wright said.

Several Hurricane City Police responded, as did Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies in support.  The altercation did not become physical, and the parties eventually disbursed on their own without further incident, Wright said.

The driver of the Ford Taurus was only cited for failure to yield at this point, Wright said.

Hurricane City Police Department, Hurricane Valley Fire Department and Ambulance and Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
