MOAB — Fatigue may have been a contributing factor in a head-on collision that killed a 16-year-old boy last week and left another person in serious condition, authorities said.
At around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 16-year-old Kayden Cresswell, of Moab, was driving a Chevy Cobalt northbound on state Route 191 at milepost 122 when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Toyota Tundra traveling in a southbound lane, according to a media statement issued by the Utah Highway Patrol.
Cresswell was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, UHP said in the statement, and was killed upon impact.
The driver of the Toyota Tundra, 40-year-old Kai Malloy, of Moab, was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
“It appears that fatigue could have been a factor,” Highway Patrol officials said. “Drugs and alcohol are not suspected.”
Cresswell was a student at Grand County High School. The county’s school district posted the following statement on its Facebook page:
It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that the staff of the Grand County School District learned of the passing of Kayden Cresswell. Kayden was a junior at GCHS, and a valued member of the football team.
“He was a wonderful young man that played the game the right way and always made everyone smile,” Activities Director Ron Dolphin said.
Our deepest condolences go out to all of Kayden’s family and friends, and the entire community that mourns the loss of this young man.
A candlelight service was held in Cresswell’s honor Feb. 27 on the Grand County High School football field.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
