CEDAR CITY – A 37-year-old man was booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility March 1 without bail after he was arrested on eight third-degree felonies for burglary.

The Iron County Attorney’s Office indicted Mitchell Macpeek March 3 on all counts and added a class A misdemeanor for theft.

Macpeek had his initial appearance in front of 5th District Judge Keith Barnes March 4 and was provided a public defender. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 16.

According to charging documents, Macpeek broke into eight different Cedar City businesses between January 23 and February 13, allegedly stealing a total of $820.

In every incident cash registers were damaged in order to access the money and rocks were thrown through the windows of the business to gain entry.

Police also collected evidence of footprints at all of the suspected locations that was later used to help identify the suspect, court documents state.

Macpeek allegedly broke into five different businesses on the night of Jan. 23.

On Jan. 31 and Feb. 13, the suspect burglarized three more businesses, all of them outfitted with working video surveillance equipment, court documents state.

Authorities showed video captured from the last burglary to the management of Mike’s Tavern and Toadz.

Management from the two businesses were able to identify Macpeek and told authorities he had been at both locations and thrown out earlier that night.

“This subject was positively identified as Mitchell Macpeek,” the officer wrote in court documents. “After the Bulloch Drug video was compared to the other videos from the other burglaries it was obvious that Macpeek was the same individual in those videos as well.”
