Track and field: Cedar City teams finish strong at 1st meet of the year

HURRICANE – Cedar City teams made strong showings at Saturday’s Hurricane Rotary Invitational, the first track meet of the season. Canyon View’s boys and Cedar City’s girls both finished second to Timpanogas for the team championships.

The Timberwolf boys scored 145 points to 70 for the Falcons, 67 for Logan, 63 for Cedar and 56 for Hurricane. Fifteen teams scored. Timpanogas’ girls finished with 144 points to 130 ½ for Cedar with Wasatch at 58 ½, Dixie at 44 and Logan at 34. Fourteen teams scored.

Athletes of the meet were Logan’s Maia Garren, who won the shot put and discus and took third in the javelin, and Will Handley of Timpanogas, who won the 800, 1600 and 3200 and ran a leg on the winning 4×400-meter relay team

Several southern Utah athletes finished first or second in their respective events. Brandon Robinson of Parowan was among those considered for athletes of the meet honors as he was second in the 100, 200 and high jump and third in the long jump.

“Looking at the other times coming into the meet, I thought I’d place high,” Robinson said. “It was fun to come out and do what I was supposed to do. I hope I get faster and stronger.”

Starlee Woodbury of Dixie won the 100-meter hurdles with Tiera Orr of Desert Hills second; Allan Madsen of Hurricane was second in the 110-meter hurdles; Jaslyn Gardner of Enterprise won the 100 and 200 with Cedar’s Julia Hunt second in the 100; Pine View’s Rylee Holt was second in the 3200; Pine View’s Neitana Leung Choi won the javelin with Nate Ben of Hurricane second; Cedar’s Jaymie Dangerfield was second in the girls’ javelin; Cedar’s Dylan Clements was second in the boys’ long jump with the Lady Reds’ Carly Davis second in the same girls’ event; Pine View’s Kaytlin Dowdell and Chanse Riding of Desert Hills both took second in their respective discus events.

Orr of Desert Hills and Cedar’s Morgan Myers were one-two in the high jump while Cedar’s girls won the 4×100 relay with Canyon View second; Canyon View’s boys won the same event with Hurricane second; the Falcons’ Seth Dabb won the 400 with Ike Urquhart of Dixie second; Cedar’s Rachel Hunt was second in the girls’ 400; Cedar’s Samantha Twitchell and Brandon Webb were both second in the 300 hurdles and Cedar’s girls won the 4×400 relay while the Cedar boys were second.

“I thought we had a great meet,” said Cedar girls coach Josh Bennett. “We wanted to state qualify all three relays and we did and we had up to 10 girls do it, too. If we can keep improving, that’s key.”

The next state qualifying meet will be the Pine View Invitational on April 1 and 2. Most local teams will take next weekend, which is Easter weekend, off.
