ST. GEORGE — Every Friday, the Bureau of Land Management and its partners host the popular Brown Bag Lecture series which provides unique opportunities for members of the public to learn more about the area’s natural resources and public lands.
Speakers at the Brown Bag Lecture series include geologists, range specialists, biologists, archaeologists, rangers and other specialists who delve more deeply into subjects tied to the Arizona Strip and surrounding public lands. For those who want to learn more before venturing out or are curious about these remote and rugged landscapes, the lectures are an excellent way to bring the resources and related issues to the community’s doorstep.
The hour-long lectures begin at noon at the Interagency Information Center, located at 345 E. Riverside Drive in St. George. Admission is free, but space is limited for this popular lecture series. Attendees are advised to reserve their free seating early. Tickets become available one week prior to each program. April 8 — Washington County Historical Society
The Washington County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization formed to promote and perpetuate the history of Washington County, Utah, and operates as an umbrella organization promoting historical preservation in the county. George Cannon will be describing the multifaceted activities coordinated by the Society.
April 15 — Utah state parks in Washington County
Washington County is home to four Utah state parks. Laura Melling will describe the challenges of managing the wide variety of resources and visitors who enjoy Gunlock, Quail Creek, Sand Hollow and Snow Canyon state parks.
April 22 — Dixie 4 Wheel Drive
Southwest Utah continues to become more and more popular as an off-road vehicle destination. Milt Thompson of Dixie 4 Wheel Drive will review the wide variety of off-road routes available to explore, both in Utah and on the Arizona Strip.
April 29 — Friends of Gold Butte
Gold Butte is located between Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument, Arizona, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area, just south of the City of Mesquite. Many groups and individuals have been working for the protection of Gold Butte’s extraordinary resources for many years. Jaina Moan, executive director of Friends of Gold Butte, will relate why so many support additional protections for this astounding landscape.
