MESQUITE, Nev. — Residents of Mesquite have been receiving “Tax Liens” in the mail recently threatening them with bank levys, wage garnishment or property loss if it is not paid immediately. The Mesquite Police Department said the letter is a scam.
“It’s pretty common,” Mesquite Police Officer Quinn Averett said. “That’s what is called ‘phishing,’ where they are throwing out letters to see who will bite, or respond, by giving their account information and personal identifiable information.”
Averett said the “phishing” catches some people.
“Occasionally we do get those that respond, so unfortunately when they do give these people information, there’s not much we can do other than document it in a police report.”
Averett said if you receive one of these phishing mails to simply throw it away or contact local police. Do not call the phone number on the notice, and do not send money.
