ST. GEORGE – The City of St. George will pedal its own observance of “National Bike Month” Monday inviting the community to come on out and “Bike with Pike.”
The event starts and ends at the Crosby Family Confluence Park just down from the Dixie Center St. George, 1850 S. Convention Center Drive. People are encouraged to arrive with their bicycles and families for a bike ride with St. George Mayor Jon Pike.
Starting at 6 p.m., St. George Police Mountain Bike Patrol will wheel in with their own bike rodeo while participants enjoy hot dogs on the barbecue and music from DJ Lex.
The bike officers will also offer bicycle safety tips to children and adults alike.
Following the bike rodeo and barbecue, the mayor will lead the crowd on a bike ride from Confluence Park to Tonaquint Park, on to Cottonwood Cove Park and back. The ride is expected to start around 6:30 p.m. and wrap up around 8 p.m.
“The goal is to just get everyone out and ride,” Assistant to the City Manager and Director of Support Services Marc Mortensen said.
The city also hopes the evening spin will help people begin to see bicycles as a viable mode of transportation within the city and not just vehicles for recreational use.
Monday also marks the beginning of “Bike to Work Week” which runs through Friday. The mayor has pledged to ride his bike to work each day, Mortensen said, and the community is invited to do the same.
Friday itself is “National Bike to Work Day.” On that day cyclists can stop by the corner of St. George Boulevard and Main Street between 7-9:30 a.m. for treats, refreshments and some surprises.
Bike with Pike is sponsored by the City of St. George, the Southern Utah Bicycle Alliance, St. George Active Transportation Committee and the Southwest Utah Public Health Department.
