HURRICANE — A cyclist wearing a helmet was saved from possible head injury after being struck by a pickup truck as he crossed State Street in Hurricane Friday evening.
Just after 8 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to 200 W. State Street in Hurricane to a reported collision between a pickup truck and a bicycle, Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.
The 16-year-old male cyclist received minor injuries from the collision.
Officers determined the cyclist was struck while attempting to cross from the north side of 200 West to the south side of 200 West by crossing State Street.
The teen was struck by a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 47-year-old man just as he entered the westbound lanes of State Street at South 200 West, Buell said.
The driver of the truck attempted to avoid the collision by turning his wheel sharply and braking quickly, but he was unable to avoid hitting the teen and knocking him off the bicycle.
“It’s very possible that he (the cyclist) could have had a much more serious head injury and the helmet may have prevented it,” Buell said.
Emergency personnel tended to the youth’s injuries at the scene, however the teen refused transport to the hospital, Buell said.
All six occupants in the truck reported no injuries. The truck sustained minimal damages.
Both westbound lanes of State Street at 200 West were blocked for approximately 20 minutes after the collision, however officers were quickly able to clear one lane for traffic to proceed, Buell said.
No citations were issued.
The Hurricane Police Department, Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue, and Washington County Sheriff deputies responded and tended to the scene.
