ST. GEORGE —A “Ribbon-cutting and Dedication” with attendant open house for the public will be held Tuesday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the newly developed Marion D. Hanks Scout Camp at Quail Creek in Hurricane.

Southern Utah Home Builders Association and the Boy Scouts of America have combined efforts to build the approximate 4,000-square foot Pavilion/Training Center and an outdoor amphitheater at 4680 W. 150 North.

Members of the Home Builders Association and many businesses throughout Southern Utah have donated material and contributed countless hours to bring this project to completion, the association’s news release stated.

Jeff Madsen of Interstate Homes said:

It has been a pleasure to represent SUHBA in coordinating the efforts of its members in completing this project for the Boy Scouts of America. Only in Southern Utah can you get such amazing contractors to donate countless hours of time in an industry where time is more valuable than it has been in the last decade. Because of these generous efforts, the BSA has a resource to be able to do better what they do best; to turn our young kids into outstanding citizens and future leaders of our community.

Paul Tikalsky, field director of development for the Southern Division of the Utah National Parks Council, said the council has been thrilled to work with the Southern Utah Home Builders Association in the building and completion of the training center.

This versatile building will serve over 15,000 young people registered in the scouting program with a corresponding 5,000 adult volunteers from Beaver, Utah, to Mesquite, Nevada.

Events such as “Cub Scout Day Camp,” “Wood Badge,” “Advance Leader Training,” spring and fall “Camporees,” are just a few events already scheduled.

The facility is a real community asset, Tikalsky said, and is available for church groups, business getaways and outdoor education.

Future development plans include adding a climbing tower, rope course, zip line, gateway, donor recognition rock display and unit shelters, the news release said. The property is not designed as a long-term summer camp, but as a weekend and midweek activity center.

“We of the Boy Scouts of America organization will be ever grateful to Southern Utah Home Builders Association for their contributions in the quality building of this project,” Tikalsky said. “This will be a lasting legacy to our young people and community.”
