Grand Canyon, Ariz. – National Park Service Search and Rescue crews are looking for a 52-year-old man reported missing Saturday in Grand Canyon National Park.
At approximately 3 p.m. Saturday the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call reporting a missing person near Kelly Tanks in the extreme western portion of Grand Canyon National Park.
Floyd E. Roberts III, 52, of Treasure Island, Florida, was reported missing by a member of his hiking group.
Roberts is described as 5-feet 11-inches tall, 170 lbs, with gray hair. He was last seen wearing a red long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, Nike shoes, and a blue Lowe Alpine backpack. Roberts and his party were on day one of a multi-day backpacking trip.
A missing persons investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time, according to a news release issued by the Public Affairs Office of Grand Canyon National Park.
An excessive heat warning for parts of the Grand Canyon National Park was issued earlier this week by the National Weather Service.
The warning now in effect began Sunday and continues through Wednesday for areas below 4,000 feet in the canyon.
Temperatures in some sections of the park could reach 117 degrees. Hotter than normal temperatures will also hit the rims, with highs of 97 degrees on the South Rim and 91 degrees on the North Rim, the park service said.
Hiking in extreme heat can lead to serious health risks including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, hyponatremia and hyperthermia, the park service warned.
