WASHINGTON COUNTY — The “Little Creek” brush fire burned nearly 50 acres in just six hours resulting in a collective response from six different fire departments.
Just before 3 p.m. firefighters from Hilldale/Colorado City Fire and Rescue and the Smithsonian Fire District responded to a brush fire in the Little Creek Mesa located 18 miles east of Hurricane.
By 9 p.m., the blaze had spread to approximately 50 acres, authorities said.
The area that’s affected is wilderness and no structures are reported threatened, Hilldale/Colorado City Fire Chief Kevin Barlow said.
Meanwhile, reinforcements were called in to assist, including fire crews from Zion National Park, the Utah Division of Forestry and the Bureau of Land Management’s Color Country Fire District and Arizona Strip Fire District.
Additionally, Hurricane Valley Fire District and Washington County Fire remain on standby, Barlow said.
The blaze was fast moving and fueled by Juniper and Pinion Pine, the chief said, however the forward progression of the fire has stopped at this point.
Once the sun set and the winds died down the fire finally stopped progressing forward,” Barlow said, “but it is not contained at this time.”
The Utah Department of Forestry has crews on site planning to work throughout the night and into Monday, Barlow said.
