BRYCE CANYON — Visitors to Bryce Canyon and Ruby’s Inn Saturday will find a myriad of activities and celebrations coinciding with the centennial of the historic inn as well as the centennial of the National Park Service.
Both the “Bryce Canyon Rim Run and Walk” and the “Bryce Canyon Fly-in and Car Show” will take place Saturday. Visitors who come for either event will also be able to take advantage of fee-free days in Bryce Canyon National Park, making it an ideal time to visit the area.
Bryce Canyon Rim Run and Walk
Ruby’s Inn will once again host the annual 5-mile Bryce Canyon Rim Run and Walk Saturday.
“The Rim Trail is one of the most popular ways to see the amazing view at Bryce Canyon National Park,” Lance Syrett, general manager at Ruby’s Inn, said. “This is one of Utah’s most scenic races.”
The race begins at 9 a.m. and curves through ponderosa pine forests while overlooking Bryce Canyon. The gently-rolling course has an elevation of about 7,600 feet and both begins and ends at Ruby’s Inn.
“This year’s event is even more exciting because it coincides with our centennial celebrations,” Syrett said. “My ancestors, Ruby and Minnie, settled in Bryce Canyon 100 years ago. We’ve been expanding considerably while keeping it a family business ever since.”
Registration fees are $25 online or $30 in person. Ruby’s Inn will provide registered runners with a cowboy lunch, a ticket to the Bryce Country rodeo, a T-shirt and a chance to win prizes.
In 2015, 128 runners and 56 walkers competed. Participants traveled from as far as Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Tigard, Oregon.

Bryce Canyon Fly-in and Car Show
The historic Bryce Canyon Airport will host its third annual Fly-in and Car Show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., welcoming car and plane enthusiasts for an afternoon of prizes, food and giveaways.
Keeping up with tradition, attendees can expect to enjoy an airport appreciation open house featuring the static plane display and old car show, in addition to a lunch prepared by local Boy Scouts. As an added bonus, the show will be held during the National Park Service’s birthday weekend, meaning entrance to the park will be free for all visitors.
“This year’s event will be especially fun, as we are also celebrating the National Park centennial,” Falyn Owens, executive director of the Garfield County Tourism Office, said. “Once pilots, drivers and attendees see the show, they can take the opportunity to explore the gorgeous Bryce Canyon, which is just a few minutes away.”
In addition to the plane display and car show, activities will include an open house, lunch, prize drawings and giveaways. Local Boy Scouts will also have an opportunity to earn their aviation merit badge from the airport’s ground-school pilot.
Pilots interested in attending the fly-in can register here. The event is open to all aircraft. Preregistered aircraft will receive a 30-cent-per-gallon fuel discount.
