HURRICANE — PGA pros and amateur golfers alike will gather next week for a four-day Open Pro-Am tournament at Sand Hollow Resort in Hurricane benefiting Utah’s foster children.
The “Sand Hollow Leavitt Group Open Pro-Am Golf Tournament” is a four-day tournament that tees off Wednesday. Teams can register on the Sand Hollow Resort website, and the tournament still has open spots for amateur registration. Net proceeds of the tournament go to Utah Foster Care.
This tournament brings in a number of high-ranking players, including PGA FedEx Cup Tour professionals Tony Finau and Zac Blair and PGA Web.com Tour pro Nick Killpack.
The event, themed “share your home, share your heart,” holds special meaning for Killpack, who worked with Utah Foster Care to get his first foster placement. Fostering has been an “unbelievable experience” for Killpack and his wife who are planning to adopt the boy they brought into their home six months ago.
Killpack and his wife considered fostering for years before receiving their first foster child, he said. His enthusiasm for fostering has grown since he became involved with Utah Foster Care.
“We feel like parenting is the secret. It is something that would solve all our country’s social economic problems — everything,” Killpack said.
Utah could place every one of the state’s children in the system, he said, if just half a percent of the state’s households fostered one child.
“In Utah, we could save them all.”
Leavitt Group has been the primary sponsor of the Sand Hollow Pro-Am Open since it began two years ago.
“We have an opportunity to be able to create what we hope to be the Utah Open for Southern Utah,” Leavitt Group Affiliate Director Mark Leavitt said.
The Open is also meant to help up-and-coming players reach their potential, resort General Manager and Tournament Director Adam Jasperson said. Amateur players are encouraged to participate, and registration is open to everyone.
Registration fees are $400 for amateurs, $575 for professionals and $475 for Utah Section PGA professionals. The Pro-Am fee is $2,500 for a team of four. The prize purse is $40,000, and the tournament winner receives $18,000.
A benefit auction and banquet for tournament registrants will also be held during the event.
The tournament is open to the public for anyone who wishes to watch the competition.

I don’t know how a foster kid would be better off with you golfing. Perhaps actually taking a foster kid golfing would be more personal and meaningful to them.
