HURRICANE — A motorcycle rider and his passenger were transported to the hospital Saturday after being thrown from the bike during a four-vehicle collision on State Street in Hurricane.
Just after 2:15 p.m. Saturday officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to a crash at 4100 West State Street involving four vehicles, one of which was a motorcycle, according to information obtained in a written statement provided by Hurricane City Police Public Information Officer Tiffany Mower.
Upon arrival, responders found the motorcycle, a 2014 Harley Davidson, lying on its side off of the roadway in the eastbound emergency lane of SR-9 facing west, with three other vehicles scattered in both eastbound lanes of travel, Mower said.
The two riders, a 66-year-old man riding the Harley and his passenger, both sustained injuries during the crash and were quickly transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
After taking witness statements, officers determined the westbound rider of the Harley Davidson was attempting to make a U-turn from the inside lane of West State Street. As a result, he was struck as the bike crossed paths with an eastbound Hyundai Elantra, according to Mower’s statement.
The 16-year-old driver of the Elantra was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the Harley as it crossed into their lane of travel, and struck the rear section of the motorcycle, throwing both riders into the eastbound lane of West State Street.
Meanwhile, the driver of a 2015 Subaru Forester, also traveling eastbound, slammed on their brakes to avoid hitting the Harley and its two riders as they were thrown into the outside lane of West State Street, which was directly in the Subaru’s lane of travel.
At that point a 1991 Toyota pickup truck traveling directly behind the Subaru was unable to stop in time struck that vehicle from behind, the officer said.
All other drivers and their occupants involved in the crash denied transport to the hospital, Mower said, and three of the vehicles were towed from the scene. The Subaru remained operational and was driven from the site of the collision.
Traffic was impacted for approximately one hour as responders tended to the scene and cleared the roadway.
Officer from the Hurricane City Police Department, Washington County Sheriff, and emergency responders from Hurricane Valley Fire District responded and tended to the scene.
