LAVERKIN — A woman was seriously injured when she shot her hand with a rifle near the Confluence Park area in LaVerkin Thursday evening.
LaVerkin Police were called at approximately 5:55 p.m. and arrived with medical personnel at the scene of the incident near 560 West Center Street.
“There was an adult female who had been shot in the hand and was requesting help from us,” LaVerkin Police Chief Ben Lee said.
The woman was transported to the hospital where she underwent surgery for her hand injury, Lee said.
LaVerkin Police have not yet interviewed the woman, and more information will be obtained when she completes her medical treatment.
“We’re treating it right now as an investigation for an accidental discharge,” Lee said
Investigators believe the woman was alone at the time of the incident.
Police recovered the Remington 700 rifle at the scene.
Although police have yet to find the exact cause of the incident, it comes on the heels of a recently settled class action lawsuit involving Remington firearms.
The suit claims that trigger mechanisms with a component part known as a trigger connector are defectively designed and can result in accidental discharges without the trigger being pulled.
This suit also claims the X-Mark Pro trigger mechanism assembly process created the potential for excess application of bonding agent, which could cause Model 700 or Seven bolt-action rifles containing such trigger mechanisms to discharge without a trigger pull under certain limited conditions. This covers triggers manufactured between May 1, 2006, and April 9, 2014.
Owners of these firearms or the components thereof are entitled to have their trigger mechanism replaced, receive a voucher code for Remington products on the company’s website, or be refunded money spent on the defective products.

The Office of the Attorney General California Department of Justice Bureau of Firearms provides the following six safety tips for handling firearms:
- Treat all guns as if they are loaded.
- Keep the gun pointed in the safest possible direction.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
- Know your target, its surroundings and beyond.
- Know how to properly operate your gun.
- Store your gun safely and securely to prevent unauthorized use. Guns and ammunition should be stored separately.
Besides those six basic safety tips, the following should also be kept in mind when it comes to firearm safety:
- Never handle a gun when you are in an emotional state such as anger or depression. Your judgment may be impaired.
- Never shoot a gun in celebration (such as on the Fourth of July or New Year’s Eve, for example). Not only is this unsafe, but it is generally illegal. A bullet fired into the air can return to the ground with enough speed to cause injury or death.
- Do not shoot at water, flat or hard surfaces. The bullet can ricochet and hit someone or something other than the target.
- Hand your gun to someone only after you verify that it is unloaded and the cylinder or action is open. Take a gun from someone only after you verify that it is unloaded and the cylinder or action is open.
- Guns, alcohol and drugs don’t mix. Alcohol and drugs can negatively affect judgment as well as physical coordination. Alcohol and any other substances are likely to impair normal mental or physical functions and should not be used before or while handling guns. Avoid handling and using your gun when you are taking medications that cause drowsiness or include a warning to not operate machinery while taking the drug.
- The loud noise from a fired gun can cause hearing damage, and the debris and hot gas that is often emitted can result in eye injury. Always wear ear and eye protection when shooting a gun.

A woman was shot in the hand. Was this woman alone? Was anyone else involved? Was the accident inside a building, or outside? Was the woman handling the weapon, was someone else handling the weapon, or did the weapon act out on it’s own?
The recall of Remington weapons may be related to this story, but maybe not. We don’t know because this article is missing a lot of information.
