CEDAR CITY – Mackenzee Brough scored off a free kick by Ashley Brindley four minutes into overtime to lift Snow Canyon to a 2-1 victory over Canyon View in the Class 3A girls soccer quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Brielle Hoskins put in a corner kick from Adi Melendez. Snow Canyon missed a penalty kick before the Falcons scored their goal. Jessica Hinck got the save on the PK to keep the game scoreless until Hoskins’ goal in the 25th minute in the first half.
The Falcons, the Region 12 champion, got their goal just before halftime as Morgan Haag blasted one into the net in the 38th minute off a teammate’s cross.
“Canyon View played well,” said Snow Canyon coach Kenny Kunde. “We had the run of possession, but we had a hard time getting scoring opportunities. We outshot them 18-2, but they frustrated us a little bit.
“We had a lot of missed opportunities and our girls fought through the pressure of the playoffs. Our girls did what we asked.”
For the Warriors, who are 12-6-1 on the year, it was the third goal of the year for Brough and the fourth for Hoskins. Freshman sensation Heidi Smith, who leads the team with 12 goals, was held out of the scorebook on this day.
Freshman Megan Rodgers was the winning goalkeeper.
Snow Canyon will play Juan Diego in the semifinals. Canyon View ends the year with a 10-8 record.
The 3A is down to its final four teams, with the semifinals Friday at Jordan High School.
The Ridgeline Riverhawks, a first-year school from Cache Valley, is into the semis as a No. 4 seed after a 1-0 win at Tooele Saturday. Ridgeline, 7-8-3, will face Logan in the first semi at 4 p.m. The defending-champion Grizzlies ousted Hurricane in the first round, 2-0, and defeated Region 10 co-champ Stansbury 5-3 Saturday.
The Riverhawks stunned Region 9 No. 1 seed Desert Hills in a PK shootout Wednesday before Saturday’s win at Tooele. Logan (13-3-1) beat Ridgeline by the same 2-1 score twice this season.
The No. 2-seeded Lady Warriors (12-6-1) will battle Juan Diego in the other semifinal (6 p.m. Friday at Jordan). The Soaring Eagle, also a No. 2 seed, blew away Region 10 champ Park City 6-2 Saturday at PCHS. Juan Diego (12-5-1) is the only team left to have beaten Logan this year.
The state championship match is Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy.
