ST. GEORGE – Rather than throwing leftover paint or unused lawn chemicals into the garbage can, Washington County residents can drop off hazardous materials at the county landfill for free Saturday morning, Nov. 5.

The Washington County Solid Waste District is taking a proactive approach by providing residents with a way to properly dispose of their hazardous materials.

Aerosol cans, medical waste, pesticides, car batteries, propane, fluorescent light bulbs, rechargeable batteries, fuel, herbicides, paint, paint thinners and other paint supplies are among the types of household hazardous waste that will be accepted at the landfill Saturday. Oil is collected and recycled year-round.

We provide this service free of charge to the residents so they have a safer and better way of disposing of hazardous wastes that accumulate around the house,” Washington County Solid Waste District Manager Neil Schwendiman said.

“We provide a very safe landfill with a liner system, however, utilizing this household hazardous waste collection event we can recycle or dispose of these materials in areas that are designed for their disposal.”

The district held the first household hazardous waste collection day in Washington County in June 2008.

Household chemical products are considered “household hazardous waste” once they are no longer in use or have passed their expiration date, district information states. The toxic nature of these products and the potential for them to ignite make them hazardous to homeowners and other residents.

Household hazardous waste is not regulated by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality or the Environmental Protection Agency.

“It would be a logistical nightmare to try to regulate what people are putting into their trash cans. It would consume too much time and too many resources,” district information states.

The article is misleading because it implies that the event is this coming Saturday. It is actually Saturday of next week, Nov. 5th.
