CEDAR CITY – An attempt to make a minor traffic stop in downtown Cedar City quickly turned into a high-speed chase Thursday night after the vehicle’s driver led police onto the interstate.

At around 9:30 p.m. Cedar City Police initially tried making a traffic stop for a minor infraction near 1000 West 200 North, according to Sgt. Jerry Womack. However, the driver of the vehicle refused to stop, instead leading authorities southbound onto Interstate-15 via exit 59.

“They were driving at high speed but never got above 100 miles per hour,” Womack said.

At around milepost 45 the vehicle made a U-turn through the median and began heading north toward Cedar City again.

The driver finally pulled over at milepost 50 where police were able to conduct a felony stop and take two suspects, a male and female, into custody. The suspects’ identities were unknown at the time of publication.

“This is still under investigation so we aren’t releasing a lot of information at this point,” Womack said.

During the chase, authorities said they saw the suspects throw a bag out of their vehicle at around milepost 57. Police were still trying to locate the bag at midnight.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
