Letter to the Editor: Liberal violence is just the ‘tip of the iceberg’

OPINION — I think that everyone who watches our government has seen the goings-on in those two Eastern power-centers, New York and Washington, taking a distressing turn in the last two weeks.

First came New York’s public performances of a play, ostensibly Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, but rewritten so that the title character, who is stabbed to death in Act III, is an obvious caricature of President Trump.

The same sort of people who, the day after Mr. Trump’s election, held up signs captioned: “YOUR VOTE WAS A HATE CRIME” are now taking their disdain for the democratic process, when it doesn’t produce the results they want, to the next step.

Then, on June 14, a politically-involved man who had campaigned for Bernie Sanders, and accused the new President of destroying our country, tried to gun down several Republican congressmen, grievously wounding Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the Majority Whip.

Defenders of American liberalism can correctly point out that outbursts such as these are rare. But the big picture is not so rosy. Violence is but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to liberal rejection of elections and self-government.

Most high-ranking liberals realized long ago that it is more effective to simply rule without respect to election results or elected officials. Rather than gun them down and have their actions condemned by all, these sinister schemers have quietly rendered elected lawmakers increasingly irrelevant to the way our country is governed.

One should recall that most foreign countries which legalized abortion or same-sex marriage did so through a vote of the people or their representatives. Amazon’s new cutting edge drone technology is being deployed first in Britain, rather than the United States, because American bureaucrats, without any Congressional involvement, have outlawed most commercial drone flights.

Democrats howled when elected county-clerk Kim Davis wouldn’t license same-sex marriages, but defended President Obama’s refusal to enforce immigration laws. In their eyes, then, it seems that an act of Congress, or any other elected body, is of little or no authority, while the dictates of bureaucrats and judges should command our absolute obedience.

Events like (the) Wednesday (June 14) rampage at the baseball diamond are indeed horrific. But Americans who really care about preserving our Republic will see that the threat posed by those who are content merely to shove our representatives aside, rather than massacring them, is also worthy of our concern.

Liberal violence also includes vile, distasteful rhetoric, even from our politicians….

and of course, that sort of rhetoric never comes from the political right

OK…Which political conservative openly and brazenly stated that they were glad some lefty befell a tradegy and wished they were dead?

It’s amazing how you can generalize what some obscure nebraska democrat volunteer said on some backwater radio station to be the thinking of every dem politician and voter. You’re simple, dumb, and a true right-wing loon. Reminds me of “commonsense”.

          😉

i don’t think it was a radio station actually. don’t really care where it’s from. 😉

    Well stated, Mr Stein.

Very well written commentary of the current political climate in America. Unless this Democratic endorsed hatred is toned down very quickly by the Democratic party , there will be much more bloodshed on the streets of America and that will drive the true Patriotic American to a defensive position, which will in turn, create more bloodshed. WAKE UP America and especially the fine people of Utah, who have set back and watched the violent liberals infest their state.

I don’t know how the dems drifted so far into loony land of being the party of the gay agenda, transexuals, illegals, islamists, refugees, etc etc etc. But the trumpite clowns and their R-party are every bit as bad or worse. Don’t think for a minute they’re not. And again, I don’t endorse any sort of violence, but I was happy to see some of them “put in their place”. I just wish it had been bigger fish. But can’t complain; it’s been a long time coming.

If this were a court case, the judge would take judicial notice that liberal rhetoric is out of control, vile, hatefull, and destructive. When you watch a liberal vs conservative pundit debate on cable news it goes like this. Conservative cites 20 recent examples of political left wing radical speech i.e. burning the White House down, glad Scalise was shot, wish he died etc. The Liberal responds, yes, but 8 years ago Rush Limbaugh said something mean about Obama. Wow!
The whole thing is out of control. The only solution is the ballot box.

  • NoNonsense June 24, 2017 at 11:15 am

I’m confused. One minute liberals are all safe space snowflakes, who’s tears could easily have filled a pool in which Trump supporters could swim. To now being an ultra violent, scary group of thugs that are hell bent on an overthrow of the meek, loving, respectful and humble right wing?
Come on guys, we can’t just keep changing the entire narrative every time it suits us. Both sides have fringe groups that say and do horrible things. Affixing a label to half of the country on the actions of these few people only create a bigger, and unnecessary divide.

    • comments June 24, 2017 at 12:54 pm

Agree with you. They change their narrative around to whatever suits them at any given time, but no matter the change in the story it’s always “them librul’s fault”. Even with so much common ground you can’t reason with people who refuse to use critical thinking. Wingnutters are so set in their ways, and the R-party can pretty well get away with murder and blame “the libruls”, and trumpites and wingnutters swallow that sort of rhetoric hook, like, and sinker. Wingnutters are still in full denial about the 8 year reign of Bush II and how destructive that regime actually was. The point is: believing these republicans currently in power will fix anything for the better is foolishly naive, childish, and on par with believing in santa claus. You can’t fix stupid… You clowns just keep on believing “it’s all the librul’s fault”.

      😉

@Robert: Very well written ONE-SIDED commentary. Your conservative blinders are still on. Do you always GENERALIZE. Please turn off Fox “news” and Hannity. You have been brainwashed if you think the “hate” rhetoric is only coming from the “liberal” or Democratic side. You seem to have forgotten so much from the 8 years of Dick Cheney, oh and his “Robin” W. I guess you are also one of “those” that considers the East and West coast voters “elite”. Take a look at the comment by NoNonsense. Take off those blinders. I always heard while living in NYC that “Not all cops are bad (while they were killing minority citizens and making a killing with their corrupt practices – I lived in a precinct that had to be split because of the corruption – rampant). It’s just the bad ones that make every other cop look bad”. Same applies to politics. And don’t forget Free Speech – it’s that 1st amendment in the Bill of Rights. Your’s would be the 2nd, I am sure. But I am sure you are skeptical about the 4th.

Are you saying the “only patriotic Americans” are Republicans and what exactly would the “defensive position” be – violence?????

@comments: Wow ! “loony land” and “put in their place”. Your comment about being “put in their place” could be construed as VIOLENT.

It is instructive to note that a 2015 version of Caesar included an actor who looked like President Obama and a 2012 version had a Hillary Clinton look-a-like. It is also worthy to note that our current President said,

“I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.”

Trump also encouraged violence against protesters at his rallys. Violence should not be excused or encouraged by anyone. Speaking out against violence should start at the top but sadly, our President has not shown any leadership in that regard.

  • hiker75 June 24, 2017 at 5:22 pm

And look who Trump hosted with Palin…

Best known for the song “Cat Scratch Fever,” Nugent said in 2012 that Barack Obama should “suck on my machine gun”. He added: “Hey Hillary [Clinton], you might want to ride one of these into the sunset, you worthless b****.”

Who cares! I find it pleasantly ironic that a few of the guys that did nothing in the face of Sandy Hook were shot and wounded by a homeless man. This is truly an amazing country. Obviously more will be needed of the same in the future, not so they will finally do something, I wouldn’t expect that; but just as a little more divine punishment for their failure to act in any way. Maybe Wayne LaPierrie will have an similar encounter someday soon with someone wanting to, as The Donald put it, exercise their 2nd Amendment rights! How funny; but, elect a Clown, expect a circus.

Wow! A lot of hate and name calling here. I may as well get my 2 cents in. Lets not for get about Bill and Hillary’s friend Bill Ayers. I guess since nobody died in his public bombings it’s okay… we could sit here and regurgitate media headlines all day and it wont change a thing.

  • commonsense June 25, 2017 at 7:28 am

Hateful rhetoric and violence are an admission of failure to govern. As Trump gets this country back on a course to greatness, the hate from the left will increase. It is self hate from failed policy.
Repudiation of Obama’s socialist agenda fires the realization that the Dems have been so wrong.
Having police and military on the right side is comforting.
