CEDAR CITY – The Canyon View Falcons were the only Region 9 team in action the last two nights. After losing in straight sets to open the season against Panguitch, Canyon View rebounded with gritty play against Delta in CV’s home opener, but fell in four sets 25-14, 23-25, 25-7, 25-20.

Canyon View came out flat in the first game as Delta ran out to the early lead. Before long, it was 14-6. The lead grew to double digits at 20-10 before the Lady Rabbits cruised to end the game.

In the second set, Delta again jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. Behind the service of Lorien Colbert, the Falcons took their first lead of the match at 8-7. Both teams traded points over the next few minutes. Brielle Fullmer scored six consecutive points on her service, with a couple coming from aces, to give Canyon View a 16-9 advantage. But Delta closed the gap, pulling within two at 21-19 and then to a single point at 24-23. But an attack error by the Lady Rabbits allowed Canyon View to tie the match at one set apiece.

Falcon head coach Monica Jensen would probably like to erase the next 10 minutes as Delta jumped out to an 8-3 lead and then stepped on the gas to pull out a very lopsided 25-7 win in the third set.

Canyon View was able to pull out of its funk in the next set. Delta again had the early lead, but the Lady Falcons again overtook them at 8-7 in the fourth set. The two teams traded points and at 10-9, Malia Vasi went down with a sprain and had to leave the game.

Shortly after that, Delta extended the lead to three points, 13-10. Over the final minutes of the match, Canyon View matched its opponent point for point, but could not close the gap. The Falcons did pull to 22-20 before Delta would rattle off the final three points.

Vasi led the Falcons with 14 assists. Eowyn Colbert had seven kills and five blocks. Fullmer led the team with eight digs. Lorien Colbert had four service aces.

“Vasi played well tonight,” said Coach Jensen. “She was able to create a lot of opportunities for her teammates and also had five kills herself. Eowyn Colbert stepped up and led our team with some great kills and blocks from the middle. We are continually improving and I thought our players played with a lot of heart tonight.”

Canyon View opened the volleyball season for Region 9 teams with a game on the road against Panguitch. The Lady Falcons, who are adjusting to a new coach this season, dropped the opener in straight sets 25-8, 25-14, 25-11.

Vasi led the team with six assists and four kills. Camry Higgins had seven digs.

“Vasi showed good leadership on the court against a tough Panguitch team,” said Coach Jensen. “Shayla Johnson stepped up and brought stability to the team. We learned a lot this game and are looking forward to improving every time we come out to play.”
