Lehman Eugene ‘Gene’ Shawler

Lehman Eugene “Gene” Shawler, 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017. He was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Youngstown, Illinois, to Leo J. and Mabel L. Shawler.

Gene moved to Monmouth, Illinois, in 1928. He proudly served his country during WWII in the 507th Bomb Squadron, 333rd Group. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

In 1939, Gene moved to Long Beach, California. He married Betty Lorraine McKee on July 4, 1941. They had three children: Terry, Linda and Bill.

Gene was a gifted carpenter and enjoyed ocean fishing. He was a member of the Long Beach Tuna Club and received many awards during his fishing days.

Gene is survived by his children: Terry, Linda and Bill; and his sister, Shirley. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends, who all loved him dearly.

Services

  • Graveside services with Military Honors will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 at 9:00 a.m. at Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 S. Dixie Drive, St. George.
