ST. GEORGE — An open house celebrating the June opening of the East Tower at Intermountain Dixie Regional Medical Center will be held Wednesday.

The public is invited to tour the new pediatric unit from 4-6 p.m. Attendees may enter through the south main entrance at Dixie Regional on River Road and follow signs to the new unit.

The open house will offer a fun scavenger hunt and tours of the new unit to teach people about the services pediatrics provides.

“We want people to know we are here to care for their children,” said McKenzie Reber, a pediatric charge nurse at the hospital. “I had a little girl tell me last week that she felt like she was staying in a hotel and not a hospital. When she said that I thought, ‘That’s how I want every child to feel.’ This open house is really to let everyone know that when they come to the hospital, whatever it’s for, they can feel like they are at a hotel rather than a hospital.”

Other services in the East Tower beginning in June include a wound clinic, hyperbaric medicine, rehabilitation services and an inpatient neurosurgical unit. Part or all of these services will be featured during the tours and the hospital’s main celebration events, which will be held Sept. 12-15.

The medical center expansion and consolidation project will be completed this year, a hospital spokesperson said.

The new purpose-built unit will have 12 inpatient rooms, six of those being flex rooms to share with the hospital’s neuro specialty rehab. There also will be four outpatient bays for treatment. Each room will have a pediatric bed and a sofa with a pullout bed for families to sleep on when staying with their children. There will be a dedicated playroom and a teen space for all patients and family members.

“We’ve been waiting for this for a really long time,” said Jason MacPherson, nurse manager of pediatrics. “This unit is built from the ground up for pediatrics, so it is specific to our patient population that includes adolescents, infants, toddlers and school-age children.”

The current pediatrics services will continue at the hospital’s River Road location when the 400 East campus unit is open. Those services include emergency care, surgical services and outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy and rehabilitation.

Dixie Regional partners with Primary Children’s Hospital and hosts its subspecialist outpatient clinics allowing more local care. Those services include pediatric endocrinology, cardiology, neurology and hematology. The unit also features child-life services, pet therapy and visits from community heroes children enjoy meeting, such as firefighters, EMTs and policemen.
