Harold Dean Caldwell

Nov. 7, 1931 – May 18, 2018

Harold Dean Caldwell, 86, passed away at his home May 18, 2018, in LaVerkin, Utah, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to William Marr Caldwell and Agnes Rae Caldwell, Nov. 7, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He had two younger brothers who passed away early in life Lamar (Marry) and LeRoy (Roy). He watched his brothers suffer for many years.

Dean moved to Wyoming where his dad and mother operated a store. He helped in the store and out on the ranch. He moved back to Salt Lake City and graduated from West High School. He went into the service when he was 18, and was in the Army Reserve for about 5 years when he was honorably discharged.

He married Shannon Banks on July 9, 1955 in Salt Lake City, their marriage was later solemnized in Salt Lake City temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dean had three children from a previous marriage: Linda, Karen and Mike. He and Shannon had four children: Randy, Jeff, Mark and Suzette. They were married for 63 years this July.

He ran a sheep ranch with his dad for a few years and loved that life. He worked for Singer Sewing Machine Co. for about five years, then worked for Sperry Rand, and then went to work for Kennecott where he retired after 21 years.

Dean spent most of his free time outdoors camping, fishing, hunting for deer, elk, bear and moose, riding his four-wheeler and looking for arrowheads. He was very involved in archeology and was president of the Salt Lake Archeology Club.

He is survived by his wife, Shannon (LaVerkin); children, Randy (Salt Lake City), Jeff (Cedar City), Mark (St. George), Suzette (Joe) (Riverton), Linda (West Jordan), Karen (Mayfield), Mike (Salt Lake City); 16 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services

  • Funeral services will be Saturday, May 26, noon, at the LaVerkin 5th Ward Chapel, 300 W. 100 S., LaVerkin, Utah.
  • There will be a viewing Saturday prior to services from 10-11:30 a.m. at the church.
  • Interment will take place in the LaVerkin City Cemetery.
