ST. GEORGE — Tyson Fisher, the infielder and pitcher who helped lead the Dixie Flyers to the state 4A baseball title last month, was recently named Region 9’s most valuable player. Fisher leads the all-region team selections, as voted upon by Region 9 coaches.
“Tyson has been a leader in our program instilling confidence and resiliency to all of those around him,” Dixie head coach Danny Ipson said of Fisher, a four-year starter.
Fisher has been the Flyers’ No. 1 starter in the pitching rotation each of the past three years, during which he also batted third in the lineup, Ipson said.
As one of Dixie’s ace pitchers, Fisher went 9-1 on the mound for the Flyers this season and had an earned run average of 0.817 over 60 innings pitched, the third-best ERA in the region. Click here for end-of-season region pitching leaders and stats for Region 9.
Fisher was also formidable as a hitter, compiling a season batting average of .512, second-best in Region 9. He accumulated 42 hits, including nine home runs and nine doubles, and drove in 33 RBIs. His on-base percentage of .618 was the highest in the region. Click here for Region 9’s final hitting leaders and stats.
Fisher hit two home runs in Dixie’s 4-3 victory over Pine View in the state quarterfinals May 16 and was also the winning pitcher in the state championship game, a thrilling 1-0 win over Desert Hills.
Coach Ipson cited Fisher’s versatility and ability to play virtually any position.
“He has great athletic skills, and has been flexible for us over the years in being able to play multiple positions, settling in at third base at the midpoint last year,” Ipson said. “He has been crucial to our defensive lineup, whether he is on the mound throwing strikes, or in the infield where he was an important part of a very solid defensive infield that committed only 14 errors all season last year as an infield group.”
“Tyson can do and accomplish anything he sets his mind to do,” Ipson said.
Fisher has committed to play baseball for Dixie State University starting this fall.
