ST. GEORGE — In honor of Flag Day, veterans from The Retreat at Sunbrook were presented a wooden flag in appreciation for their service to the U.S.
Veterans, Sunbrook residents and family members gathered at the senior-living retreat Thursday morning as Nielson RV presented the flag to the veterans. Officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department also attended to raise the American flag during the ceremony.
Max Maxfield, an artist from Mesquite, Nevada, donated the wooden flag to Nielson RV because of their appreciation for veterans.
“He presented the flag to us a couple of weeks ago and he said, ‘I appreciate what you do for veterans, so could you please find a home for this?'” said Katie Leavitt, an employee at Nielson RV.
Sunbrook currently has approximately 15 veterans living in its facility, said Amanda Sorenson, activities director at Sunbrook.
She said the veterans living there have brought character to the retreat.
“To even hear their stories is amazing,” Sorenson said. “They just kind of bond together. And you realize how lucky we are for the sacrifice they’ve done.”
Today’s generation is different, she acknowledged, so having events like flag presentations are important in order to keep honoring veterans.
“It’s important to do things like this to bring back the traditions,” she said.
Nielson RV is in the process of creating programs to help support local veterans, Leavitt said.
“We support our veterans 100 percent,” she said. “We want to show our appreciation for their sacrifice they made, so we can enjoy our freedoms today.”
