ST. GEORGE — The Zion Lions semipro football team will face the Wasatch Revolution in the South Western Football League’s championship game Saturday at Pine View High School. The contest is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The unbeaten Lions have defeated the Revolution twice this season, winning 34-14 at home on April 21 and coming from behind for a 14-10 win at Ogden on June 2.

In addition, in last year’s championship game, with both teams then playing in the Rocky Mountain League, the Lions beat the Rev 21-17.

Zion Lions owner and head coach Dale Stott said that even though the Lions have defeated the Revolution the last three times they’ve played them, they don’t plan to allow themselves to be complacent.

“We’re not necessarily going to do anything different. We’re just going to go with our game plan,” Stott said at the team’s practice Wednesday night. “We’re strong in all three phases of the game: offense, defense and kicking.”

The Lions are averaging a league-best 44.6 points per game over their eight victories this season, while holding their opponents to just 8.5 points per game.

“We just need to run our game offensively and have our defense stay solid,” Stott added. “Our  players are excited to finish strong.”

Zion quarterback Michael Mataolo is expected to get backfield assistance from Shaquille Patterson, speedy rusher who gained more than 100 yards in one half against Cedar earlier in the season.

The Zion Lions’ 50-man roster comprises an assortment of Southern Utah athletes, most of whom are in their early to mid-20s, with varying levels of football playing experience ranging from high school or junior college to National Football League.

The six-team SWFL, which started its season in late March, included first-year club Cedar Bears, who played their home games at Cedar City High.
