Crews from the Santa Clara-Ivins Fire Department responded to the blaze at approximately 9 p.m. at the old Apex mill facility on Mojave Desert Joshua Tree Road just south of where the road intersects with Old Highway 91.

“We got here and the brush was on fire. It did impact one of the buildings,” Santa Clara-Ivins Fire Chief Dan Nelson told St. George News at the scene.

“We did get a quick containment on the fire,” he said. “It didn’t spread anywhere else outside the property here.”

The fire burned through less than an acre of vegetation surrounding the building before it was contained near a water tank.

After putting out the exterior flames, crews pried their way into the small structure that caught fire to ensure it was completely out. The other building at the site is a metallic structure and did not catch fire.

The fire was initially reported by people recreating in the area who saw smoke coming from the facility, Nelson said, noting that the callers said they didn’t see anyone else in the area at the time of the fire.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation,” Nelson said.

No injuries resulted from the fire or the firefighting effort.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
