ST. GEORGE — Summit Athletic Club has opened a new center on 963 S. Bluff St., adding more space, heart rate zone training and an entirely different way to workout: “kubes.”

Summit has partnered with Kubex Fitness to bring workout kubes to St. George. A kube is exactly what it sounds like – a small, cube-shaped workout room for one person. There are 15 cubes, each with a different kind of equipment and a computer inside.

A kube user can tell the computer what kind of workout they want – such as improving performance, endurance or weight loss – or they can choose a part of the body to focus on, and the computer displays how to do the workout. Summit also has a program to help people improve their golf game, with plans to eventually add other sports like tennis and swimming.

A person goes through each of the 15 kubes, with the exercise in each kube lasting two minutes for a 30-minute total workout. The focus of the kubes ranges from cardio to weight training in order to provide a full-body workout. Exercise programs were designed by certified professionals and trainers after extensive research and planning.

The kubes serve three main purposes:

  • Time and efficiency for those with busy schedules.
  • Privacy for people who are uncomfortable in a gym environment.
  • Specially designed programs for people who aren’t sure how to use certain equipment or don’t know what to do to reach their personal goals.

Summit Athletic Club member services director David Talamantes said some people are unsure exactly how to start when they come into a gym.

“They don’t know what to do that’s in alignment with the goals they’re looking for,” he said, “so it (the kube system) really takes the thought process out of working out because now professionals have put together workouts that tell you what to do in alignment with your goals.”

Kubes aren’t the only new thing at the new Bluff Street location, otherwise known as “Summit on Bluff.” The new gym gives people another 24,000 square feet in addition to the other three locations. Besides the kubes, they still offer regular exercise equipment and a wide variety of classes, including a yoga, fitness and interval training, a cardio zone and two weight rooms. Now they also offer Summit zone training.

Summit zone training is small group-based training where a person’s heart rate is monitored to make sure it’s in the right heart rate zones for maximum fat burn. It also boosts metabolism to keep a person in the fat burning zone long after they’ve left the gym.

“The results have been really amazing so far,” Talamantes said.

The Summit zone training and Kubex training programs are part of the Summit Training Center, which is an add-on to a regular membership for $10 a month. Members of one Summit gym can access all four locations, which all have different equipment and an individual atmosphere.

“You’re a part of Summit’s family when you join here,” Talamantes said. “It’s not just about this location, it’s about the experiences from it and having so many options.”
