3-year-old Utah boy drowns at Lake Powell

ST. GEORGE A three-year-old Utah boy drowned at Lake Powell last week after falling off the upper deck of a houseboat into the water.

National Park Service rangers at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area were alerted to the report of a child fatality in the area of Willow Creek Canyon at Lake Powell around 3:30 p.m., Friday, according to a joint press release from the National Park Service and Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The child was transported to the Halls Crossing launch ramp where responding rangers met with the reporting party.

The rangers learned the child was asleep on the upper deck of the houseboat and during the night fell off into five feet of water. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

The child has been identified as Jayden Cooper Vokas, of Park City, according to the press release.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident with the assistance of the NPS and San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.
