ST. GEORGE — Snow Canyon High was the only Region 9 team to win its opening-round match Wednesday, the first day of the state 4A playoffs. The top-seeded Lady Warriors edged past the Ridgeline RiverHawks at home, 2-1. Heidi Smith scored both of Snow Canyon’s goals, after which Ridgeline was able to score one.

The win puts the Lady Warriors into the quarterfinals of the single-elimination state tournament. Snow Canyon will next host Ogden, Region 11’s No. 3 seed, which won at Salem Hills, 3-1 on Wednesday. The Snow Canyon vs. Ogden game is at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The winner of the Snow Canyon-Ogden match, along with the winners of the other three quarterfinal games, will then advance to play in the 4A semifinals on Oct. 19 at Jordan High School. The two semifinal winners will play for the title Oct. 20 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy.

Here’s a look at Wednesday’s other three opening-round games involving Region 9 teams:

Sky View 4, Dixie 3

In a closely matched contest at Dixie, the Sky View Bobcats scored a pair of late goals to defeat the Flyers, 4-3.

The Bobcats struck first in the game’s opening minute, as Madison Daniels took a cross from the left corner and booted it into the net.

Several minutes later, Dixie tied it 1-1 on a breakaway by Kelcee Call, but Sky View answered shortly afterward with a goal by Sadie Noble that put the Bobcats back up, 2-1

With about 23 minutes left in the first half, Dixie’s Kennedy Warnick tied the score again when she beat the goalkeeper to the ball in the box from straight out and drilled it home for the equalizer. The score stayed 2-2 until halftime.

Early in the second half, Dixie took its first lead of the game when a kick from the left side hit the right post of the net and rebounded back along the goal line. Lindsey Barben was credited with that goal, which put Dixie up 3-2 for much of the second half.

With about 10 minutes left in the contest, Sky View’s Emmie Woodward managed to kick it past Dixie goalkeeper Mashaun Estridge to tie the score 3-3.

Then, with about 3:30 remaining, Woodward scored again, on another breakaway play, with teammate Addison Poulsen deftly passing it to Woodward for the well-timed assist.

With Sky View back in the lead, Dixie tried desperately over the final three minutes to get another good shot on goal, but were unable to do so, and the Bobcats picked up the road playoff win.

Estridge, a senior, made 14 saves in her final high school game.

Mountain Crest 2, Desert Hills 1

At Hyrum, Desert Hills and Mountain Crest engaged in a defensive battle, with the game remaining scoreless for the first 78 minutes before Mountain Crest went up 1-0 on an own goal accidentally knocked in by a Desert Hills player. The Lady Thunder then mounted a furious effort to tie the game in the final two minutes, eventually getting a goal in the final seconds from a free kick by Kiki Stewart that was deflected by the goalkeeper but knocked back in off the head of Lulu Harris to force overtime.

Neither team scored during the first 10-minute overtime period, with both goalies stopping multiple shots. However, in the second overtime, Breanna Arnell took a cross and nailed the game-winning goal for the Mustangs.

Logan 4, Pine View 0

At Logan, the No. 4 seeded Pine View Panthers played the Grizzlies close in the first half, but Logan pulled away with three goals in the second half to post a 4-0 win. Bizzy Arevalo scored twice for Logan.
