ST. GEORGE – At one of Free Spirit’s recent gatherings, I spoke about the “Seasons of Our Joy” and how our spiritual experience of life is metaphoric to the seasons of the earth – the experience of “expansion and contraction.”
As I have journeyed on my personal spiritual path, which is deeply rooted in Jewish mysticism or Kabbalah, I came to the awareness that not only is the calendar year with its changing seasons a representation of our spiritual path, but that these experiences of spiritual expansion and contraction are experienced on an ongoing basis. Let me give you an example.
One year while I was preparing to direct the music for the Jewish “High Holy Days,” the holiest time of the year in the Jewish tradition, I found that I was feeling disconnected from Source. My usual practices were not helping. In frustration and despair, I reached out to my rabbinic teacher and shared my dilemma with him. He considered my words, and then, with deep compassion and love he said to me, “And this too is part of the journey.” His message to me was that I was in my “winter”, or contraction, and that my spiritual spring, or expansion, when I felt connected to Life and Source, would come again.
These wise words helped me understand that just as the seasons change, so does our experience of life. The darkness and apparent dormancy of winter will give way to the spring where we will see the return of life to the trees, flowers and other vegetation that had appeared to be slumbering. The summers bring the warmth and longer days while fall brings the shedding of the leaves in life’s preparation to go within, to contract once again.
Wherever you are currently in your spiritual “season”, know that the promise of change exists and each season brings with it blessings. For all of us on our spiritual paths, there will always be a time for inward reflection as well as a time to share our gifts. This knowledge brings with it the discovery of the Joy of our Seasons.
