Pine View Middle math teacher sparks learning excitement

ST. GEORGE – So often we hear of teachers committing crimes and hurting their students. However, the truth is that these types of teachers are an extreme minority. In fact, most teachers are no less than undeniable hero’s. Teachers commit their careers to serving the future generations throughout the world by willfully giving all that they have to help students succeed. Teachers’ sacrifices seem to frequently go unnoticed and, as a result, unappreciated.

Here is an example of a teacher who has gone above and beyond the call of duty and continues to do so every single day. Carol Huebner, a math teacher at Pine View Middle School, has been teaching professionally for over 30 years. Even in all that time, she has never stopped caring for her students and has always done all that she could to help them achieve success. While many jobs end when work hours are over, Mrs. Huebner’s job does not. She spends countless hours outside of work grading papers, writing test and worksheets, and deciphering the learning needs of her students.

This year Mrs. Huebner has created an educational environment that is miraculous. Math is a subject feared by many, and, for a large number of students, seemingly impossible to enjoy. This year Pine View Middle School has over 100 students signed up to participate in the Math Counts program. Math Counts is an optional program that holds math competitions between schools. In other words, these 100 plus students are all exited to do math!

As one may expect, the enthusiasm in Pine View Middle School’s math students did not come by chance. Mrs. Huebner has successfully sparked a flame of determination in all of those Math Counts members. Only a small fraction of them will be able to compete in the regional competition, however all of them are determined to hone and use their mathematical abilities to go there and represent their school.

For those who are skeptical of the excitement for math that Mrs. Huebner has brought to her students, the proof is here. The link below goes to a YouTube video of Mrs. Huebner rapping about exponents at a school assembly. Though the sound quality of the video is poor, it is overwhelmingly clear that, to these students, math is exiting!
