St. George Resident Cleo Wardle Honored for Community Service by AARP Utah

MIDVALE – AARP Utah honored Cleo Wardle at its Andrus Award Dinner on October 14 in Salt Lake City at the University Guest House.

Wardle is a volunteer for the Huntsman World Senior Games, contributing hundreds of hours each year to promote and direct the Horseshoe tournament. She also volunteers at an elementary school, helping first grade students learn to read. According to her nominator, she is knowledgeable and energetic in the accomplishment of her duties as an assistant director of Horseshoes and has helped the sport grow, bringing in more athletes to the Games and helping improve its economic impact to the community.

Wardle was one of 14 recipients of AARP Utah’s Outstanding Volunteer awards. The top honor given during the evening was the Andrus Award for Community Service, named for AARP’s founder Ethel Percy Andrus. It was received by Lisa Schneider of Salt Lake City for her work with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Nominations for the AARP State Andrus Award for Community Service may be submitted by AARP members, volunteers, and chapter or unit members. Nominations also may be submitted by external organizations or groups and by members of the public at large. The recipients of the Outstanding Volunteer awards in Utah were nominated for the Andrus Award by various organizations and individuals.
