ST. GEORGE — A reportedly reckless driver nearly ran another car off the road near mile marker 23 southbound on Interstate 15 Friday, causing the other driver to panic and roll her car in an effort to avoid being hit.
Utah Highway Patrol responded to the incident at 3:18 p.m.
Another vehicle with a Saskatchewan license plate was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempting to pass other vehicles, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Larry Mower said. The driver was swerving between the right and left lanes of traffic and came very close to a green sedan with an Alberta license plate.
The vehicles nearly made contact, causing the driver of the green sedan to panic and lose control of the car, Mower said. The sedan then left the roadway and its wheels dug into the dirt, leading it to flip over onto its roof, he said.
Emergency medical services from Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue worked quickly to extract the female driver from the upended sedan. Her arm was pinned underneath the car, making the rescue effort more delicate. She sustained broken bones in her arm and was transported to the hospital in an ambulance, Mower said.
The woman’s sedan was badly damaged and pieces of the vehicle’s exterior were strewn about the brush. The driver’s personal belongings appeared to have been thrown from the vehicle and lay haphazardly in the wake of the rollover.
Fresh asphalt was visibly disturbed and skid marks were apparent where the vehicle left the roadway.
Other than its Saskatchewan plate, witnesses at the scene were unable to identify the vehicle that caused the rollover as it sped away from the scene, Mower said. No citations could be issued as a result.
The sedan’s airbags did not deploy because there was no frontal impact to the vehicle, but the driver was wearing her seat belt.
“She was buckled in and I think that prevented any more serious injuries. She’s very fortunate that things turned out the way they did,” Mower said. “She was actually quite calm and in very good spirits especially considering everything she just went through.”
Washington County Sheriff and Utah Department of Transportation Incident Management also responded to the incident.

Well, there are far more of them. The really bad ones seem attracted to River Road, Bluff, Sunset. But any other road will do. Just don’t hurry to enter an intersection after the light turns green; St George rule; next three cars may pass through after the light changes.
