CEDAR CITY — Three people were taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle collision on state Route 56 on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident, which was reported shortly after 3:30 p.m., involved a white Hyundai Sonata and a white Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Randy Riches said the Hyundai had three occupants, an adult male driver plus a woman and a young child in the back seat. Meanwhile, the man driving the Chevrolet was that vehicle’s only occupant.

Riches said the driver of the Hyundai was heading south on 4200 West when, for reasons unknown, he pulled out in front of the Chevrolet, which had been heading westbound on SR-56. There is no traffic signal at that intersection; cross traffic on 4200 West is required to stop and yield to the vehicles on SR-56.

The Chevrolet impacted the driver’s side door of the Hyundai in a T-bone-style collision, sending it to the opposite side of the roadway.

Riches said the Hyundai driver, who was unconscious for a short time, sustained moderate injuries. He was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to Cedar City Hospital. His female passenger in the back seat had minor injuries, while the baby was uninjured; however, both were also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet driver wasn’t injured and wasn’t taken to the hospital.

Riches said all four individuals involved were properly restrained, either with seat belts or a child safety seat.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene. Because the Hyundai was a hybrid model, Cedar City Fire Department personnel worked to disconnect the fuel cell batteries in order to prevent them from overheating and catching fire.

Traffic along the highway was impacted for approximately one hour as emergency responders worked to clear the scene.

Those responding to the incident included UHP troopers, Cedar City Police officers, Iron County Sheriff’s deputies and Cedar City Fire Department personnel, plus three Gold Cross Ambulance crews and a supervisor.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
