Driver killed in fatal head-on collision south of Cedar City

HAMILTON FORT — On Saturday morning, the sole occupant of of a vehicle traveling southbound on Old Highway 91 south of Cedar City was pronounced dead after injuries sustained from a head-on collision.

Iron County Sheriff’s Office Lt. David Mitchell said a 911 call regarding a head-on collision involving two vehicles came in to dispatch at 7:36 a.m.

Iron County Sheriff deputies, Utah Highway Patrol troopers, Cedar City Police, Cedar City Fire Department, Department of National Resources, Enoch City Police and Gold Cross ambulance personnel responded to the scene, near the intersection of 4900 West and Old Hwy. 91.

The single occupant of a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, a 19-year-old male, was pronounced deceased on scene, Mitchell stated in a press release. The driver of the second vehicle, a 2013 Ford F150, also carried only one occupant.

One female was alert and talking to emergency responders when they arrived.

“The female driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital via ground ambulance after complaining of chest pain,” said Mitchell.

The female driver told sheriff’s she was traveling northbound, according to the release. The diver of the SUV was traveling southbound and crossed the center line just before the collision.

Weather, heavy traffic and/or bad road conditions were not a factor in this crash, Mitchell noted. The cause of this crash is still under investigation.
