HURRICANE — A multi-car crash on state Route 9 Monday triggered reports of a potentially fatal incident. However, while people were taken to the hospital, the multi-car crash sounded worse than it actually was.
The crash occurred at the intersection of 3700 West State Street (state Route 9) near the intersection of Sand Hollow Road around 5:08 p.m., Hurricane City Police Public Information Officer Dan Raddatz said in an email.
The driver of the white Chevy Silverado pickup failed to stop for a red light in time and collided with the back end of a stopped red Ford Explorer. This launched the Ford into the back of a gray Chevrolet Equinox. A Hyundai Sante Fe was also hit by one of the vehicles and received minor damage.
Following the crash, one of the drivers, a 26-year-old Hurricane man, appeared to be having a serious medical episode.
“It was initially reported that one of the drivers had severe breathing problems and LifeFlight was paged,” Radditz wrote. “After a couple minutes, the driver’s breathing returned to a more normal and LifeFlight was canceled by paramedics on scene.”
The man, as well as two other drivers — a 69-year-old man and 26-year-old woman — were taken to St. George Regional Hospital for their injuries.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the crash temporarily blocked traffic in all directions on SR-9 as authorities worked to clear the incident. This created a backup of vehicles in the eastbound lanes that stretched at least a mile and was just beginning to clear up by 7 p.m.
Responding to the scene were the Hurricane Police Department, Hurricane Fire and Rescue, Gold Cross Ambulance, the Washington County Sheriff’s Officer and the Utah Department of Transportation.
This report is based on statements by law enforcement personnel and may not include the full scope of the findings.
