IVINS — The utility boxes along the Center Street corridor in Ivins have become a little more colorful. 

After unanimous approval from the Ivins City Council back in June, what were just bare, bluish-grey utility boxes along the street are being colored by artwork from local artists as well as students at Vista School.

Michele Adams, head of the Ivins City Arts Commission, said that along with the young artists from the school, the work of 12 other artists were considered for the three utility boxes.

Ultimately, six were selected as part of the It’s a Wrap! program. 

The Vista artists – who range from the third to eighth grade — all occupy one box near their campus, while five of the artists have their works on the side of a box at Kwavasa Drive.

But one artist, watercolorist Adele Greenleaf, has one box between Vista School and Rocky Vista University all to herself.

“They really are beautiful and it fits the theme of being out of the desert,” Adams said. 

The paintings weren’t directly painted onto the boxes. Star Sign and Banner duplicated the works for wraps that were put around the boxes. 

The actual paintings, as well as the entries that didn’t make the final cut, are being exhibited in the lobby of Ivins City Hall through the end of the month.
