ST. GEORGE — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement Wednesday afternoon clarifying information about the reported drowning in Toquerville on Monday.

The text of the updated release follows:

“On the afternoon of Dec. 13, a media release was posted on the Facebook page of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office regarding a drowning incident that took place in Toquerville, Utah.

“We would ask that you disregard that post or any other media releases or information regarding that incident. The Sheriff’s Office received information from, what was deemed to be, several reliable sources that has now been confirmed to be inaccurate as to the condition of the child.

“We sincerely apologize for any burden or difficulty this may have caused to anyone who received that information, especially to the family. We will release an official media release in the future with appropriate updates.”

The previous news release stated the child had been transported by Life Flight to a Salt Lake City hospital.

Sgt. Joel Hafoka with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department confirmed in an additional message to the media shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday that the child is in critical condition.
