ST. GEORGE — Utah Tech University will host the Trailblazing Speaker Series throughout the Spring 2024 semester.
These 50-minute presentations are open to the public.
Held every Tuesday in the Dunford Auditorium, located within Utah Tech’s Browning Learning Resource Center, both students and community members are invited to hear experts give their presentation of their respective fields.
Rob Gray, the director of Learning Services and associate dean for Library & Open Learning Services at Utah Tech University said the creation of this event took a group of people to make it successful.
“A committee of associate deans from all the colleges across campus and the library oversees the planning of the Trailblazing Speaker Series,” he told St. George News in an email. “This is an arduous process given that many of these speakers come from various areas of the U.S and often teach master’s courses as well as part of their visits to Utah Tech University.
The series aligns with the university’s goal to provide educational resources and learning opportunities to the Southern Utah community. Students who sign up for the course will even receive one credit.
“The committee’s goal is to choose speakers from many disciplines, so the community, students, and faculty and staff can get the latest information from experts in many areas,” Gray said. “Since each college chooses speakers from their emphasis areas, we end up with a wonderful array of interesting topics.”

- Jan. 30 – Sarah Sanders Gardner – “Change the World Around You: Embracing Neurodiversity”
- Feb. 6 – Dr. Carlos Mercado – “Fad Diets, Pills and What Really Works”
- Feb. 13 – Linda Sabey and Josh Sabey – “Turning Anger into Power: A Mother and Son’s Award-Winning Cinema”
- Feb. 20 – Natalie Ashby, president of St. George Regional Hospital
- Feb. 27 – Tasha Toy – “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion”
- March 5 – David Brinley, senior legal counsel for Shell Oil
- March 19 – Eugene Szymanski, senior geologist of the Energy & Minerals Program, Utah Geological Survey
- April 2 – Dr. David Morris – “Secrets to a Longer Life”
- April 9 – Jerald Simon, music/arts entrepreneur
- April 16 – Jason Grygla – “The Challenges for Neurodiverse Adults and How to Overcome or Mitigate Struggles”
“The Trailblazing Speaker Series (formerly University Forum) is the main lecture series on campus and has been operating for many years,” he said. “The series is very popular among faculty/staff, students, and the southern Utah community, so the committee expects the series to continue for many more years in the future.”
