Shoot4Cash was created by Stephen Wade Auto Center to benefit the clubs, teams and organizations at Washington County’s high schools that don’t typically receive sponsorship dollars.

“It gives these students extra cash to pursue their interests,” said Jamie Bahlmann, public relations director for Stephen Wade Auto Center. “We’ve had all kinds of organizations win money, from Latinos in Action and the student council to robotics teams and debate teams.”

Every local high school is encouraged to post a Shoot4Cash video on its Instagram account at the start of basketball season. Students are encouraged to participate by leaving a comment with the name of their favorite club, team or organization.

The three organizations that receive the most comments qualify for the next round. This year, a total of 3,366 comments were posted across all schools’ Instagram videos.

Each event allows three students representing a specific organization to “shoot for cash” during the halftime show at one of their school’s basketball games. Students have 30 seconds to make a layup, a free throw and a three-point shot, followed by a half-court shot. The layup is worth $50, the free throw $100, the three-point shot $250 and the half-court shot $500.

“I love Shoot4Cash because of the atmosphere,” Bahlmann said. “The energy inside the gym is amazing.”

A total of $5,500 was awarded this year between Hurricane, Pine View, Crimson Cliffs, Snow Canyon, Dixie and Desert Hills high schools. Of the 44 organizations that participated, 18 received funding. Four students sank the half-court shot.

“I love being part of this event because it gives back to the schools and the students, and it’s really, really fun,” said Mark Musgrave, “The Voice You Know” from The Fan Sports Network. Musgrave has been involved with Shoot4Cash since the beginning as an emcee.

Shoot4Cash has raised over $35,000 for local high schools since 2017. And that doesn’t include the more than $65,000 donated during the past nine football seasons through the Kick4Cash events, which challenge students to score field goals for money.

Goldenwest Credit Union is a not-for-profit cooperative serving more than 175,000 members at 45 branches throughout Utah and Idaho. Canyon Media provides creative and effective marketing, advertising and promotion-based strategies for local and regional businesses. These companies have joined forces to support Washington County students by sponsoring and administering the Shoot4Cash and Kick4Cash events each year.

“This is probably my favorite promotion that we do,” Bahlmann said. “I love giving back to our schools.”
