Art in the City: D-Week continues with free swag, food around St. George

ST. GEORGE — As part of Utah Tech’s D-Week celebrations, Thursday’s “Art in the City” event saw six different booths around St. George staffed by students who were armed with free swag for all who stopped by.

Brooke Ulrich, director of University Events and Promotions, told St. George News that the goal was to attract attention to Trailblazer art.

Each of the six locations had different swag. In addition to the three sponsors, Innovation Plaza had laser-etched names in water bottles, and the downtown location provided cookies.

Utah Tech University, along with several businesses, made the event possible. Chick-fil-A gave out free nuggets, Patches and Iris distributed free long-stemmed flowers and Tagg-N-Go car wash awarded free car washes.

“We provided a fun event for the community to participate in during D-Week,” Ulrich said.

Janalyn White, the wife of Utah Tech’s interim president Courtney White, said she enjoyed meeting people from across the community.

“It’s so fun to connect with the students, to see them come and participate and get out. I love connecting with the students,” White said. “Some high school students even came through.”

Isabelle Peck, a seasoned D-Week worker and a member of the university’s events and promotions office, described this year’s Art in the City as a microcosm of the week’s purpose.

“It’s fun to see different faces and get to help them interact with each other in a super unique way,” Peck said.

She estimated that about 70 people had come to their booth at Chick-fil-A.

Ulrich said her booth was host to people from children to Utah Tech staff.

“There was the cutest little kid who waved at us,” Ulrich said. “We also had over four advisors in a car who were driving around all the locations.”

Ulrich said the event was a success, with double the participation from last year.

In the future, Ulrich says that they may stay closer to campus as the bison at Innovation Plaza was the most popular location.

This event demonstrated Utah Tech’s slogan of “Active learning, active life” by having every booth run by students.

“D-Week is a great week each spring that involves events every day that are free to the community,” Ulrich said.

D-Week activities continued Friday with the carnival and Saturday with the traditional painting of the D.
